In the Mekong Delta, the Holy Animal Island complex consists of four distinct and magnificent islands: Dragon Island, Unicorn Island, Turtle Island, and Phoenix Island. This religion shares a border with Ben Tre Province; the Dragon and Unicorn Islands are part of Tien Giang province, while the Turtle and Phoenix Islands are part of Tan Thach Commune, Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre Province.
The Phoenix and Unicorn Islands will be visited by the majority of excursions, while the Turtle and Dragon Islands will be visited by others. Thoi Son Island, Phoenix Island, and Turtle Island are the primary tourist destinations. Particularly on Phoenix Island, which has a thriving tourism industry and traditional handcraft communities.
The major attraction on Phoenix, or Coconut, Island is a pagoda built by Nguyen Tranh Nam (the Coconut Monk), a French-educated engineer who lived for years on the meat and juice of coconuts while teaching peace and constructing his religion throughout the Vietnam War. Nine dragon pillars and a tower made of shattered dishware adorn the pagoda. One of the Coconut Monk's followers, now in her 90s, was there and was glad to converse (in Vietnamese) and display pictures of her time there with the Coconut Monk and other followers back in the day.
The other islands may not have as much political history as the others, but they are well worth a visit. The last three contain some genuinely stunning countryside as well as a plethora of crocodiles, which are happily confined. After walking the trails on Unicorn Island, hop into a sampan for a leisurely ride along the canals, surrounded by lush flora on all sides. The trip was easy, despite the fact that this section was highly packed. This is also a fantastic island for unwinding. Honey tea, as well as the abundant fruit, is a specialty. A group of local ladies will perform Vietnamese standards, including the oddly titled "If You're Happy and You Know It."
Fruit and other traditional foods, such as fried elephant ear fish, are also available on Dragon Island. There are also several shopping opportunities. There's a coconut candy factory on Turtle Island, so stock up on all the different flavors and then browse the bags, coconut handicrafts, silk, and other items.
