Ba Dinh Square plays an important and unique significance in Hanoi as it is the site of numerous significant national historical events in modern Vietnam's history.
The square was originally named Round Point Pugininer and was created by a French colony. Ho Chi Minh read the Vietnam Independence Declaration on September 2, 1945, which is today's Vietnam National Day. He mentioned the French and US Independence Declarations in the Declaration, stating that "all men are created equal and that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
Representatives from various social sectors, including workers, youth, educators, and the military, applauded the country's unity and independence. Ho Chi Minh's funeral was held in the square some 24 years later. The same audience wept and grieved in the rain to bid their revered leader farewell. The in-power Vietnamese government then chose to construct the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum on the square so that the national hero might be remembered forever.
Ba Dinh Square is now one of the rare green and undeveloped locations in Hanoi. The square hosts a variety of notable events, including parades and veteran commemorations. Interestingly, despite its solemnity during the day, the area is a favorite gathering place for locals at night: families looking for a stroll, the elderly looking to exercise, and friends wanting to socialize. A visit to Ba Dinh Square can be combined with a day or half-day tour of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ho Chi Minh Museum, and One-pillar Pagoda.
