Hoa Lu was founded over ten centuries ago in Truong Yen Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province, about 100 kilometers south of Hanoi, as the capital of Dai Co Viet (Vietnam's ancient name). Hoa Lu Ancient Capital used to be roughly 300 hectares in size, encircled by a series of arching mountains that created a magnificent landscape.
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital was made up of three parts: Thanh Ngoai, Thanh Noi, and Thanh Nam. The Thanh Ngoai, located in the Yen Thanh hamlet, in Truong Yen communal area, was around 140 hectares broad. The Dinh Tien Hoang Temple and Le Dai Hanh Temple area nowadays form the core of this main palace. Ma Yen Mountain is opposite the palace. The Thanh Noi was named after Thu Nhy Commune in Chi Phong Hemlet, Truong Yen. Children and staff were brought up in the palace. Thanh Nam was situated opposite the Thanh Ngoai and linked to it. The towering mountains encircle this site, blocking the capital's south.
In the eastern part of the citadel is Cot Co Mountain where the national flag of the Dai Co Viet is situated; a waterfall where the King Dinh has revised his army; Tien Cave to keep national property, Thien Ton Cellar, Hoa Lu outpost and Am Tien Cavern where the king's tigers have been confined to punish the guilty.
In the history of the Dinh Dynasty, the Early Le Dynasty, and the beginning of the Ly Dynasty, the relic system in Hoa Lu Ancient Capital was tied to the works of famous people. Hoa Lu became the ancient capital after King Ly Thai To transferred the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long in 1010. Despite the fact that the Ly, Tran, Le, and Nguyen dynasties were no longer located in Hoa Lu, they continued to construct temples, pagodas, and tombs there.
Visitors to Hoa Lu Ancient Capital can visit the King Ly Thai To Stele, Yen Thanh Communal House, Nhat Tru Pagoda, Princess Phat Kim Temple, Phu Vuon Thien, and the Tombs of King Dinh and King Le. The journey back to the ancient capital is more than just a journey; it takes visitors back to their roots to learn more about the difficulties of building and protecting the ancestors' country, as well as human and cultural values expressed through the Vietnam nation's permanent architecture.
