Hoang Lien National Park is located in the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range, at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 meters above sea level, in the districts of Sa Pa and Van Ban in Lao Cai Province, and partly in Than Uyen District in Lai Chau Province.
Hoang Lien National Park's forests are mostly primeval, with a diverse system of wildlife and vegetation. It has a total interior area of 29,845 ha and a buffer area of 38,724 ha. There are around 66 animal species, 16 of which are included in the Red Book of Vietnam; 347 bird species, 41 amphibian species, and 61 reptile species, including rare thorn frogs recently discovered.
The flora system is also diverse, with over 2,000 species, including 66 species included in the Red Book of Vietnam, such as green cypress, Nothotsuga, Podocarpaceae, red pine, and others. Hoang Lien's flora is split into many grades and layers. Cotton trees and jack trees with a high density can be found near the foot of the mountain range, generating scenery such as Coc Leu (Coc Gao), Coc San (Coc Mit), and others. Tropical belts with thick primitive forest sides and interlaced creepers extend from here to a height of 700 meters.
There are bare seed tree layers such as fokienia hodginsii at a height of 700 m upwards, including enormous trees with a height of 50 to 60 m that have existed for hundreds of years. Brushes of short bamboo with a height of 25–30 cm cover the land surface from a height of 2,800 m. These trees are also known as phat tran bamboo because their bodies are bare and their leaves are scattered. Some trees from the sedge, rose, and goldthread families can also be found among these trees.
Hoang Lien National Park was ranked category A by the Global Environmental Fund, the highest level in terms of biological value in Vietnam, and has been recognized as an ASEAN Heritage Park since 2006. This is also a location to preserve and protect numerous traditional cultural identities of ethnic communities in the national park's inner and buffer areas, such as the Mong, Tay, Dao, and Giay ethnic groups, among others.
