Seven streams of the Mekong River and canals meet in Phung Hiep floating village in Nga Bay Town, Hau Giang Province, 30 kilometers from Can Tho City's Ninh Kieu Wharf. Thousands of small boats carrying agricultural commodities converge on Phung Hiep to form a 1 km-long floating market. The market is said to be a southern fruit market with a Mekong Delta cultural identity.
The market is open all day, but it is busiest in the morning. Boats packed with seasonal vegetables and fruits, such as mangoes, durians, bananas, oranges, and coconuts, left their communities in the precious evening to head for the sunrise market. Every boat is brimming with fruit. Some boats have roofs, whereas others do not. On boats without roofs, the sellers must hold a stick with fruit hanging from it as a sign. Market-goers do not haggle; they simply exchange a few words, sell, and receive payment. Fruits are normally sold and transported by large boats. They will then be delivered to fruit-processing facilities or to cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, and even Ha Noi and the northern regions.
It's a floating market, but services are available; small boats serve food and drinks to hungry sellers and buyers. A whistling or waving band is all it takes to get you to buy something. Aside from fruits, native products such as snakes, birds, and turtles are readily available near the Phung Hiep bridge. These delicacies are virtually always purchased and delivered to restaurants in Can Tho and Ho Chi Minh City.
