Hue is undoubtedly one of Vietnam's best cities for a biking tour. Hue has less traffic than the other big cities, and its residents are less hurried.
Many opt to cycle along the shores of the slowly moving River Perfume and across the Truong Tien Bridge to the hundred-year old Citadel in the king's Imperial City and through the numerous American War aircraft and tanks before going deeper into the walled city where life is carried on in the coffee shops, hair-dressers, motorbike repair shops, and clothing stores.
When you reach the Imperial city's moat's end, you can go on to observe the ponds where morning glory (water spinach) and snails are harvested by ladies wearing conical hats in fishing boats. In Hue, there are numerous garden houses, and it's nice to leisurely ride by and observe their natural beauty.
Cycling around the countryside is a more intriguing approach to uncovering the other attractive aspects of Hue Imperial City. You will spend a half/full day on your bike alone in the countryside, admiring and enjoying intriguing scenes and local life.
The area surrounding Hue is ideal for people who want to inhale the fresh air and hear nothing but the flapping of dragonfly wings. The lagoons of central Vietnam are well-known, and Hue is no exception. You only have to travel 5 kilometers east of the city to find rice paddy areas, vegetable and flower farms, each with its own town in its center.
If you travel west out of regular Hue attractions, you'll find a very different scenery, with mountainous pathways leading to temples, pagodas, royal mausoleums, and garden villas, and if you keep going, you'll finally reach the Perfume River's bamboo forest.
