Hanoi's four distinct seasons are spring, summer, autumn, and winter. And each season has its own distinct beauty. In the winter, it can be bitterly cold and foggy, and in the summer, it can be blistering hot, with some erratic months in between.
Spring (February - April)
There isn't a better word to describe spring in Hanoi than "brilliant." Springtime offers light drizzles and a grey sky with humidified air from February to April, while the monsoon begins its severe downpour in May. Temperatures range from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, and the city's dress code shifts from winter jackets to raincoats due to the frequent drizzle. But don't be put off by the gloomy; the moist weather of spring produces ideal circumstances for flowers to bloom, so expect to see vibrant, colorful flowers everywhere in the spring.
Summer (May - July)
Summer in Hanoi lasts from June through August, and it can be extremely hot. Because it is humid and sticky, wear light, breathable, and sweat-absorbent clothing to beat the heat. Due to the unfavorable weather conditions, summer appears to be the most difficult season for travelers to visit Hanoi.
Hanoi, on the other hand, is vibrant in the summer, with a wide variety of flowers. People will flock to photograph the white Madonna lily in April, the red flamboyant and violet Lagerstroemia speciosa (Bang Lang flower) in May, and the West Lake lotus in June. In the north of Vietnam, summer is a season of many different fruits. Grapefruit, litchi, mango, watermelon, pineapple, and other fruits are available for tasting in Hanoi.
Autumn (August - October)
Autumn is the most beautiful season of the year, and Hanoi is Vietnam's most romantic city. This is a fantastic mixture that is suitable not just for couples but also for people seeking inner calm. Autumn in Hanoi begins when the smell of Alstonia scholaris (milk flowers) fills the streets on cool nights, and it lasts until November, when the weather turns cold. The streets are lined with water in Hanoi's many lakes. The grass is greener, with yellow and red leaf trees, and the sky is bluer.
It's also an excellent time to visit Vietnam for the mid-autumn festival, which takes place on the 15th lunar month each year and is one of the most important events in the country. Hanoi's specialty in this season is Cốm (green rice flakes), which is an autumn-specific flower, aside from milk blossoms with a distinct scent.
Winter (November - January)
Winter is typically associated with sadness due to the dark and gloomy skies. However, Hanoi appears to be experiencing its busiest days of the year, with streets more packed than usual during working hours as people hurry to finish last-minute tasks and prepare for the Tet vacation. The cold weather allows Hanoi residents and visitors to enjoy wonderful hot foods such as hotpots and grill dishes.
