In Vietnam, and especially in Hoi An, the Lunar New Year is the most major festival. Because this is a season for family reunions, life in Hoi An isn't as regular at this time. When visiting Hoi An during this time period, there are a few things you should keep in mind:
1. Should not apply for a visa during the Lunar New Year:
In Vietnam Lunar New Year, the Visa issuing Authority will be closed, as do other government offices (e.g. Vietnamese Embassies and Consulates) and your travel plan should be elaborated carefully so that you apply for a visa as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary delays. The immigration officers on call will be able to provide you with the visa stamp on arrival at the airport.
2. Plan ahead of time and reserve services:
Because the New Year holiday is such a popular time in Vietnam, services are often fully booked. The peaceful New Year atmosphere in Hoi An is popular with both foreigners and Vietnamese. To avoid any last-minute cancellations, make sure you book your accommodations weeks ahead of time and that your flights are confirmed and fully paid.
3. Don't expect all of the stores to be open:
Vietnamese people are currently preoccupied with family gatherings, cooking for the New Year's meal, and visiting relatives, so they will focus on their work. Though there has been an increasing number of shops open on the Tet holiday in recent years, tourists should be aware that some shops will not do so. Tet is not the best time to have new clothes made at Hoi An's famous tailors, especially for those who want to have new clothes made at Hoi An's famous tailors.
4. You don't have to be concerned about finding a restaurant:
The great news is that most restaurants do not close for the entire Tet holiday, but only for a few days..
5. Keep in mind the high cost:
Food, clothing, and other necessities will be more expensive than usual. Everything, including tour guide costs, will be subject to a holiday surcharge during the Tet holiday, from a bowl of Cao Lau to a custom-made suit. Furthermore, many restaurants may not have a complete menu. Prepare to pay more than your estimate in the 7–10 days leading up to the New Year's holiday.
