Bach Thao translates to "hundreds of plants", and the park is one of the last green spaces in Hanoi's increasingly industrialized city. For more than a century, Bach Thao Park, also known as the Hanoi Botanical Garden, has served as the capital's green lung. It is located behind the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
The botanical garden, which was established by the French in 1890 and covered 33 hectares, surrounded a number of French villas at the time. In addition to indigenous vegetation, several exotic tropical plants from throughout the world were brought in to create a rainforest in the city's core. To make the setting more appealing, the French planted big grass lawns, erected a hill near a natural lake, and placed cages for birds and animals along wandering shaded walks.
Many years later, Bach Thao Park was restricted to allow for the development of the Ba Dinh historical complex. Thu Le Zoo (Hanoi), Sai Gon Zoo, and the Botanical Garden were visited by birds and animals (Ho Chi Minh City). Many Hanoians now visit the botanical garden, which covers an area of over 10 acres and is a preferred spot for relaxation.
What to see in Bach Thao Park
Many tropical rainforest trees can be found in Bach Thao, including coconut, palm, orchids, and banyan trees. The remaining two-thirds are imported plants from other tropical regions, including Africa, America, and Oceania. There are some large, old trees that require two or three people to hug. This is a great site to visit if you're interested in botany or want to get some fresh air in the city.
The botanical garden is a complex of gardens, hills, and lakes where visitors can relax under the trees, wander around the lake, or watch pigeons on the islet. The land and the islet in the lake where pigeons are bred are connected by a tiny bridge. Locals consider the bridge and the hill to be ideal locations for wedding photography. Tourists visiting Bach Thao Park in the autumn, the wedding season, are likely to see a bride and groom posing for the camera. At the same moment, four or five couples may be taking photos in the park at the same moment, capturing the attention of numerous onlookers. On a typical day, a large number of locals gather here for morning or late afternoon exercise, leisurely chess play, or simply to unwind after a long day at work. Tourists can visit the park to learn more about the villagers' way of life and to share in their calm.
The best time to visit Bach Thao Park is whenever you want to enjoy the fresh air and tranquility. It can be a good idea to come here for a picnic on the weekend or during the hot summer days.
How to get to Bach Thao Park - Hanoi Botanical Garden
