Cat Ba Island is the largest of the 388 islands that make up the Cat Ba Archipelago, which makes up the southeastern half of Lan Ha Bay. It is craggy, rocky, and jungle-clad, but also poetic, lyrical, and captivating. In 1986, over half of the island and 90 square kilometers of surrounding waters were established as a national park to safeguard Cat Ba's varied ecosystems. Cat Ba Island is unique in that it preserves Halong Bay's stunning and rocky features.
Cat Ba, often known as "Pearl Island or Green Pearl in the Gulf of Tonkin" is located in Hai Phong city's Cat Ba district, to the south of the world-famous Halong Bay. It's roughly 27 sea miles from Hai Phong City, and the speedboat ride takes about an hour. As of 2019, the island is divided into six communes and has a population of 45,000 inhabitants. Thousands of people live in floating towns just off the coast.
According to a folk tale in the Northeast, Cat Ba Island was once the harem of the first man to come to explore the mountains in this region. When he discovered the precious bay with many beautiful islands that later became known as Ha Long, it was time for him to bear the fate of many lonely children whose husbands had never returned after sea voyages full of uncertainties. Then, to free his hands to explore the Hon Gai and Bai Chay areas, he gathered all the women to live on a beautiful, rich, and isolated island in the middle of the sea, located in Lan Ha Bay. Therefore, later, the land of Bai Chay, Hon Gai was called the Land of Ong, and the other island was called the Island of Ba. Experiencing many changes, ups and downs, now there are only two places left, Cua Ong (Quang Ninh) and Cat Ba (Hai Phong) because they called it wrong.
