With its various beaches, Halong Bay is considered one of the best places in Vietnam to swim. The bay is not only a lovely beach with quiet tides and clean, green water, but it is also a perfect area for sunbathing in bright sunlight. Swimming far away from the beach, perhaps diving from a boat, would be even more fun because the water is much clearer there.
The calm tides, nevertheless, still have hidden dangers, therefore it's best to follow these safety instructions:
• Before swimming or surfing, read the instructions and conditions carefully.
• Swim in a group of at least 3-5 people at all times. It's important to remember to warm up correctly.
• Swimming ability is greatly reduced in cold water, according to researchers, so try not to swim too early in the morning or too late in the afternoon, no matter how confident you are in your swimming skills. The average temperature of the Halong Sea is around 19-25 degrees Celsius, with the temperature along the beach (shallow area) being roughly comparable to the ambient temperature.
• Knowing your swimming skills can help you choose appropriate beach activities.
• Diving as deep as possible to avoid massive waves if you don't have enough time to escape. Fortunately, this is a rare occurrence in Halong.
• When surfing, avoid riding the waves in a straight line toward the coast. Surf at a small angle to the waves instead. To prevent going "over the falls," stay away from the white water at the heart of the wave.
• Never swim in deep water or when you are unsure of the depth.
• Never swim if you're inebriated. In Halong, there have been cases of death due to hypothermia and other incidents.
• Don't sunbathe for too long or you'll become sunburned.
• The water in Halong Bay is fairly warm during the winter, so feel free to swim or dive off your junk. Nevertheless, try to cover yourself immediately after swimming to avoid catching a cold. During the winter, temperatures can drop to as low as 10-15 degrees Celsius.
