With its wonderful river beauty, Ninh Kieu Wharf is located in the midst of the Hau River and Can Tho River junction, in Tan An Ward, Ninh Kieu District of Can Tho City. The image of Ninh Kieu Quay emerges in poetry and becomes the symbol of Can Tho City.
Ninh Kieu Wharf was once a riverbank at the start of the Can Tho market. Can Tho was seized by French soldiers in 1876. The river was built with bricks and stones along the coast to prevent waves, and it became the pier for six provinces, with a brisk economic exchange. The French dubbed the riverbank Quai de Commerce (Commerce Wharf), and the locals called it Hang Duong Wharf because there was a row of pine trees along the riverbank, or Le Loi Quay because it was located along the riverbank of Le Loi Street. In 1957, Do Van Chuoc, the Governor of Can Tho, established a promenade and a plant park at Hang Duong Wharf. Do Van Chuoc then petitioned President Ngo Dinh Diem (of the Republic of Vietnam) to rename the park and promenading area Ninh Kieu in honor of the Ninh Kieu historic sites (now the town of Chuc Son, Chuong My district, Hanoi)—the site of King Bac Binh Le Loi and the Lam Son soldier teams' victory over the Ming invaders.
Ninh Kieu Wharf is now a 7.000m2 tourism park, drawing the majority of local residents and tourists who come to admire the sights, wander around, and breathe fresh air. Tourists may see Can Tho Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge with the largest main span in Southeast Asia at the time of completion, from Ninh Kieu Wharf (April 2010). The bronze statue of President Ho Chi Minh is 7,2 meters tall on a 3.6-meter-high plinth, weighing more than 12 tons. Along the river's edge, Le Loi Street is now Hai Ba Trung Street, which was planned as a pedestrian street and will be the first night market in Can Tho. Every 100 meters, a variety of things such as food, fruits, souvenirs, and so on are sold.
Visitors to Can Tho should take advantage of the cruise experience at Ninh Kieu Wharf to fully appreciate the splendor of the West River area. Every night, from 19h to 21h, boat trips will take guests down the Hau River, where they may sample delicacies and listen to various musical repertoires influenced by the South.
