With a history of more than 200 years, the Hanoi Flag Tower (Flagpole of Hanoi) is considered one of the city's icons. The construction started in 1805 and ended in 1812, in the 11th year of the Nguyen dynasty's Gia Long period, five years after the completion of Hue's Flag Tower.
Between 1894 and 1897, the French colonial destroyed much of the construction in Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, and Flag Tower is one of the few architectural masterpieces that has survived to this day. Furthermore, the image of the Flag Tower has been embedded in many significant historical events; for example, the flag of Vietnam was first flown on the top of the Flag Tower in 1945, following the success of the August Revolution, and the image of the Flag Tower was first printed on money paper issued by the Bank of Vietnam on October 10th, 1954, capital libration day.
Since 1986, a national flag (24m2) has always flown atop the Hanoi Flag Tower. One flag is only used for two to three weeks on average, so there are roughly 20 flags flying in Hanoi's sky at any given time.
Hanoi Flag Tower, located on Dien Bien Phu Street in the city's heart, is a historic sight that all visitors to Hanoi should see at least once.
The Hanoi Flag Tower is 33 meters tall, with three platforms and an eight-sided tower, and the flagpole is 41 meters tall. With its initial role as an observatory, the Hanoi Flag Tower provides a stunning perspective for those who stand atop it. The eight-sided room at the top of the tower, with eight windows corresponding to eight directions, has enough space for six people to stand inside. On the tower's eastern, western, and southern doors, the words "Ngenh huc" mean "Welcome dawn's sunlight," "Hoi quang" means "Reflecting the light," and "Huong minh" means "Direct to the light." There are two staircases on the left and right sides of the northern entryway.
