Cyclo scams are as widespread as taxi scams, and in some cases, they might be more dangerous. Cyclos or bike taxis may be found on almost every street corner in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), but especially in District 1, and some of them are able to sweet-talk unwary tourists into taking a trip with them.
Only book a cyclo through your hotel or tour operator if you are convinced you want to take one. Many cyclo drivers in the city speak enough English to persuade tourists to hire them. However, be warned that independent cyclos are more likely to defraud you than those booked through a hotel. Even if the price is not significantly lower than what is given, you must bargain on principle. If you don't bargain, the driver will assume you will give in to their demands.
Make sure you understand the price agreement before you begin the voyage. Make certain you are aware of the total price and what it entails. You should specify whether your agreed fee is per person, per hour, or a total price that applies to all people and all time. It's a good idea to write it down and confirm it with the driver to avoid any misunderstandings. Also, if you plan on riding a cyclo all day and the driver will have to wait for you while you sightsee, make sure the entire fee includes the time spent waiting.
